Snow And Ice Climbing

An introductory course in snow and ice climbing that's all about climbing quality winter routes in the Cairngorms. We'll start with a brief look at the basic skills of using an axe and crampons, but the main emphasis will be on tackling some of the famous routes in the Northern Corries and Loch Avon Basin.

You'll be guided up a variety of winter climbs. We'll start with a straightforward snow gully, stretch you on a technical mixed climb and, if conditions are good, move onto a steeper ice route. In effect you'll be taught how to competently second a winter climb - this includes how to approach a route safely, the ?joy' of belaying and retrieving gear in the cold and using technical ice tools.

The aim is to give you the ability to look after yourself in what can be very challenging but exciting conditions on a Scottish winter route. You'll also be coached on the climbing techniques needed to get up these routes. The teaching ratio for this course is 1:2.

Experience A good level of aerobic fitness is the most important thing and at least some experience of seconding summer rock climbs.

Equipment You'll get to climb with good modern ice tools, either Charlet Moser ?Axars' or DMM ?Flys', along with a decent set of Grivel crampons. All other technical climbing equipment including harness and helmet will be supplied.
