Level 1 Bouldering
This course is designed for both new climbers and those who have some experience but feel that they might be missing a few of the basics to be able to continue their progression. Level 1 Bouldering will help you avoid many of the pitfalls that hinder progress and will give you the knowledge and technique to train and climb effectively.
The cost of the course includes a 30 day unlimited use pass worth £45
Each of the three 1½ hour sessions is designed to address different aspects:
Week 1 - Back to Basics
Essential climbing skills and an introduction to the principles of training: types of holds and how to hold them, footwork (inside and outside edges, foot placement, foot swaps, smearing), body position, efficient movement, balance, stability triangles, warming up, warming down, stretching.
Week 2 - Problems and Solutions
Exploring personal strengths and weaknesses and using problem setting and solving as a tool for development. An introduction to dynamics, transition of weight, a more detailed study of foot placement, and steep ground.
Week 3 - Consolidation
Advanced footwork (toe/heel hooks, flagging), understanding momentum. Learning to structure sessions in terms of your activity and recovery balance. Putting things into context and looking to the outdoors for inspiration.

The course was great! I would only have the following comments:
- perhaps ask to the instructors to follow a (loose) script so that there isn't the feeling that the techniques are thought a bit randomly (it wasn't, but this was the feeling that we had).
- provide some general insights on how to start and finish a route
- provide some general insights on how structure our climbing sessions so that we know how to get to the next level

The training was very good and I enjoyed it a lot. We came with different levels but trainers were always trying to fit difficulty to our skills. The only thing is that actually we learned how to stretch after last session as after first and second one trainers didn't have time to stay with us.

Great course, I learned so much! Lots of things to think about, lots of really useful techniques, all very clearly explained. Very fun, too. The only issue was that we didn't cover some stuff because we ran out of time.

The course and the instructors were very good, but what would be nice is if we had handouts after each session, so we have something to refer back to, as well as remember what we have learnt.

What went well
Instructors were friendly, appropriable and training was clear and demonstrative enough.
What you should improve
- You could provide handouts explaining the various techniques and tips (i.e. frogging, rock on, bridging, food swapping, flagging, reverse flagging, palming, heeling). The handouts should provide step by step explanations as well as reference pictures. I think this is absolutely essential to entice the participant to put in practise what was explained on the course. Without the handouts the various techniques are bound to be forgotten quickly;
- The centre was too busy at times and I believe to provide a better course, dedicated areas should be reserved only for the course;
- The training didn't seem to follow a specific structure but rather the sessions seemed to be conducted on a 'play by ear' basis;
- Follow up Q&A one to one sessions should be provided to the participants to make sure everything incorporated on the course was understood;
- Incoherent information (especially on stretching, warm up and cool down) was given by the different instructor. It seemed to me that type of information was left to the interpretation and believes of the individual trainers and often discordant. I found that confusion and misguiding. I think the centre should make a better effort to standardize the trainings. I also think having 3 different instructors for the 3 different sessions was not a good idea and one instructor should follow a group through the whole extent of the course;
- The basic Heath and Safety was often not cover as thorough as it should have been and at times no warnings were given in critical situation.
- The participants seemed to have different ability and overall fitness level and I found this rather disruptive. I think the centre should make a better A better effort to assess fitness levels of each individual participant as well climbing experience and ability, should be undertaken prior to the course, so that complete beginners that need a much thorough training do not mix to more experienced one.
- Overall I don't feel I've had a good value for the amount I paid and there's a lot to improve, however I'll give you the opportunity to address each single point by e-mailing me.

Well designed course. Changing the instructions was beneficial in that you got multiple perspectives of climbing (they are all quite different) and you really get to learn and work on your technique as the course progresses. The small downsides are that you sometimes cover aspects adequately covered by other instructors as well as getting the new instructor up to speed on your groups ability.

Excellent course. We had two different instructors over the 3 weeks. Both really knowledgeable and helpful and tailored the course to each student's level.
